Father of Eight remanded over two ounces of marijuana

A 25-year-old father of eight, was today refused bail and remanded to jail after being charged with being in possession just over two ounces of marijuana.

The man, Derick Persaud of Mabaruma appeared before the Chief Magistrate and denied the marijuana possession charge.

The Court was told that on the 29th July in Aruca River, the man was found with the quantity of marijuana in his possession.

The Police Prosecutor said that on the day in question, the police intercepted a boat carrying limes, coconut and fuel, and when a search was carried out, the marijuana was found in the man’s pocket.

The Police Prosecutor objected to bail and the Magistrate refused bail. The man will make his next court appearance on August 10.

The move by the Magistrate to remand the man to prison on the marijuana possession charge, comes at a time when the Prison system is battling overcrowding following the destruction of the Camp Street jail by fire.
