GDF rank charged and remanded to prison over bread vendor’s murder

A Guyana Defence Force (GDF) soldier was today remanded to Prison for the robbery and murder of Sophia bread vendor, Andrew Alexander.

20-year-old, Shaquille Grant, a Resident of Section ‘B’ Greater Georgetown, appeared at the Sparendaam Magistrates’ Court and was not required to enter a plea to the indictable murder charge.

The Court heard that on May 5th at a Bread Stand at ‘C’ Field Sophia, the accused murdered, bread vendor, Andrew Alexander, during a robbery.

According Police Prosecutor, on the day in question, at around 8:30pm,  the defendant with an accomplice, rode up to the stall on a motorcycle to purchase a loaf of bread.

As the vendor turned to pick up the bread, it is alleged that Grant whipped out a firearm and demanded cash.

However, there was a confrontation and the bread vendor, Andrew Alexander, was shot to the chest.

The accused and his accomplice made their escape with a undisclosed sum of money. The accomplice is still to be arrested.

The injured vendor was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation(GPHC) where he was pronounced dead.  Grant will make his next appearance later this month.
