Insufficient evidence allows woman to walk free after charged with brother’s murder

One year after a young woman was charged for the stabbing death of her brother, she walked out of the Magistrates’ Court a free woman today.

Twenty-five year old Debra Hansraj, of Covent Garden, East Bank Demerara left the courtroom with wide smile on her face after Magistrate Fabayo Azore ruled there was not enough evidence against the woman to get a conviction.

The former accused had told the Court that on the day of the incident, she had acted in self-defense, after she was able to relieve her brother of a knife as he charged towards her with the intent to stab her.

She had made that statement clear during initial questioning by investigators, but charges were still filed against her.

The incident occurred on April 18, 2017 as the woman and her brother were involved in an argument that turned into a fight.

The fight reportedly started over injuries that the woman had reportedly inflicted on their mother. It is alleged that the young man armed himself with a knife but the sister managed to wrestle it away from him and stabbed him as they continued fighting.

He died while receiving medical attention.
