Rupununi men remanded to prison over cultivating one acre of marijuana plants

Two Residents of Central Rupununi were today remanded to Prison after they were found to be cultivators of one acre of marijuana plants and were also allegedly nabbed with more than 200 grammes of marijuana.

34-Year-Old, Gregory Gregalis and 27-Year-Old, Amas Hendricks, both stood before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan and pleaded not guilty to the charges.

According to the Prosecution’s case, on the 21st March 2017, the two men were found on land that had one acre of marijuana plans.

AnĀ application for bail was made by an Attorney representing the two men, who claimed that the men were only visiting the land when they were arrested by Police.

The Police Prosecutor objected to bail and told the Court that the two accused were found in a hut at the middle of the farm, where the additional marijuana was also found.

The court was told that one of the defendants had already served four years in jail for a similar charge back in 2012.

Bail was denied and the two accused will make their next appearance in the Lethem Magistrates’ Court on June 6th.
