Venezuelan fined and ordered deported for illegal entry

After failing to present himself to an Immigration Officer, a Venezuelan Miner, who has been conducting mining activities in Guyana illegally, found himself before a Georgetown Magistrate today facing illegal entry charges.

33-year-old, Alexander Betencourt stood before Principal Magistrate, Judy Latchman and through an interpreter, admitted to the offence.

The court heard that on the 2nd November, 2017 at Eteringbang, Cuyuni River, the man entered Guyana without the consent of an Immigration Officer.

On 27th February during a routine patrol by Police, the man was questioned during a traffic stop and a check of his passport revealed that he had not presented himself to any Guyana immigration officer.

Following the man’s guilty plea, the Magistrate fined him $50,000 and ordered that he be deported after paying his fine.
