A 15-year-old Guyanese born, U.S resident was held at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport on Friday evening after agents of the Police Narcotics Branch discovered just over 2 pounds of cocaine in the handles of his suitcases.
The boy was about to board an Eastern Airlines flight back to the United States after spending his summer vacation in Guyana. He was traveling alone.
But his mother and two other persons who dropped him off at the airport have since been arrested as it appeared as thought the teen was unaware of the contents of his luggage.
The three are expected to remain in custody over the weekend and charges could be filed in the matter as early as next week.
The Narcotics Branch of the Police Force and the Customs Anti Narcotics Unit have both been stepping up their monitoring at the Cheddi Jagan Airport and have been working closer with the US Drug Enforcement Administration.
Over the past year, the agencies have executed several successful drug busts and have moved to the court with a number of cases against traffickers and their enablers.
Guyanese have been testing various innovative ways to get cocaine out of the country. Some have tried vegetables, hair extension and wigs, panties and even fish. But this might be the first time that a minor was being used in a drug trafficking effort at the airport.
