A 15-year-old youth from Sophia was remanded to the Sophia Juvenile Detention facility this morning after he was charged with murder.

The young man, whose name and identity will not be published because of his age, appeared before the Chief Magistrate and was not required to enter a plea to the indictable charge of murder.

The court was told that on or around February 19, 2017, the teenager stabbed Essequibo resident,  Hemant Persaud to death, behind the Stabroek Market during a confrontation.

The teen had reportedly followed a drunk Hemant Persaud and attempted to relieve him of his belongings when the two got into the confrontation and he stabbed the man to death. It was reported that the teen confessed to the crime.

The victim is the brother of Police Commissioner, Seelall Persaud.  His body was at a City morgue awaiting identification and the Police Commissioner only recognised that it was his own brother when Police investigators sent out a photograph of the man, seeking the public’s help in identifying him.

The teen will make his next court appearance in two weeks.
