23-year-old woman jailed 2 years and 11 months for 106 grammes of marijuana

A 23-year-old woman from Charlestown will spend the next 2 years and 11 months behind bars after she was found guilty of being in possession of 106 grammes of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking.

She was also fined $159,000.

Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan handed down the sentence to a shocked Tiffany Sultan of Broad Street, Charlestown today.

The Magistrate said she was convinced by the evidence provided to the court that the young woman was guilty of the offence.

It was back in January, that a raid of the woman’s house unearthed the quantity of Marijuana in  a clothes basket

The Court was told that during the search, Ms. Sultan was questioned about the possible presence of illegal items in the home.  She eventually admitted to marijuana being hidden in the house and pointed the police ranks to the stash.

She also admitted at the time that she was the only occupant of the house.

The court also heard that in a confession statement, the woman admitted that she was involved in the trafficking and sale of marijuana, adding that she usually markets the illegal product for a man she only knew as ‘ax man”.

But during the trial, after entering a not guilty plea, the woman told the court that she knew nothing of the drugs.

She said the money that was found with the marijuana was being kept for her father.

Her attorney’s plea for mercy and a light sentence were dismissed as the Magistrate handed down the 2 year and 11 months sentence.

The 23-year-old woman cried bitterly throughout the sentencing and as she was led from the Courtroom and taken in to custody.
