After being remanded on a charge of fondling a 3-year-old female relative, a 44-year-old man was badly beaten by other prisoners in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court lockups today.
The man, William Gomes, appeared in Court this morning to face sexual assault charges. He was not required to enter a plea to the charge and was immediately remanded to jail.
The incident allegedly took place back in 2016 when the child was left in his care.
After bail was refused this morning and he made his way into the lockups at the Courthouse, he was attacked by other prisoners and badly beaten, leaving him with a number of missing teeth and a mouth full of blood.
Police officers were forced to rush into the lockups and move him to another hold area until it was time to transfer him to prison.
His matter will come up again later this month.
