According to the police, the woman who was identified as Chandroutie Persaud, of River View Squatting area Mahaica was found dead early on Saturday with her hands tied behind her back and her mouth gagged.

Police investigators up to late on Saturday night were questioning two men in connection with the murder of a 68-year-old, Mahaica woman.

According to the police, the woman who was identified as Chandroutie Persaud, of River View Squatting area Mahaica was found dead early on Saturday with her hands tied behind her back and her mouth gagged.

There were a number of marks of violence to her body and her small wooden shack appeared to have been ransacked. According to investigators, a sum of cash was missing.

The woman’s murder shocked the entire community but some villagers said they believe that the perpetrators may be members of the same community who might have known the woman’s daily routine.

In a statement late on Saturday night, the Minister of Social Protection Volda Lawrence expressed shock over the “mindless” murder and vowed that her new Ministry will step up efforts to ensure the safety of all Guyanese especially women.

“In recent times, there has been a spate of mindless murders particularly of our women folk in spite of efforts made to address and eliminate this scourge. The Minister views this situation as deplorable and commits the efforts  of the Ministry to combat this wave of heinous crimes and to protect the rights of this vulnerable resource of our society”, Lawrence said.
