Acting Top Cop warns license firearm holders about “carelessness”

The Guyana Police Force has received a total of nine reports of license firearm holders losing their weapons to theft and the Acting Police Commissioner, David Ramnarine is not happy about that.

At a Friday Morning press conference, the acting Police Commissioner said in all of the cases, carelessness was a factor.

He said in one case, one license firearm holder fell asleep in his parked car in the wee hours of the morning and when he was awakened, his cellphones and firearms were all missing. Ramnarine said in another case, a business woman left her gun at home and it was stolen when thieves broken into the empty house.

Of the stolen weapons, seven are .32 pistols, one is a 9mm gun and the other is a shotgun.

The Police Commissioner (ag) said that with most robbery cases being tied to the .32 pistol being used, one could arrive at the conclusion that many of the stolen weapons are now being used by bandits for robberies.

“I want you to understand that there is a big hue and cry about firearm licenses and yet in these instances, this is the level of irresponsibility, this is the behavior we have”, Mr. Ramnarine said.

He said the irresponsible behavior of persons who should exercise personal discipline, is contributing to challenges that the police face and the general endangerment of the society.

Ramnarine reminded license firearm holders that they would have been granted licenses for their personal security and therefore they should exercise a high level of care and discipline.
