The Alliance For Change is accusing the People’s Progressive Party of waging a “nasty” campaign in the local government elections and believes the Guyana Elections Commission must address the issue.

At a press conference today, the AFC complained that many of its supporters in PPP stronghold areas are being harassed and intimated by the members of the PPP, especially those who would have offered their signatures to the AFC nomination lists.

Chairman of the Alliance For Change and Government Minister, Khemraj Ramjattan at an AFC press conference today said the PPP is engaging in ‘defeatist tactics”.

“The PPP is fearful of the AFC’s challenge and is trying to use our party as the scapegoat for its campaign to discredit GECOM and the elections in Guyana”, Mr. Ramjattan said.

The AFC claims that the PPP has been going around to the persons who would have nominated AFC candidates and trying to get them to claim that they did so without understanding what they might have been doing.

Mr. Ramjattan explained that all of the nominators who signed up in support of his party’s LGE candidates would have done so willingly and genuinely.

“When they had signed on, they do pretty well knowing that they were signing on the AFC list. The PPP has started this process of bullying them, coercing them, duping them”, he added.

The AFC Chairman said the issue ought to be addressed by the Guyana Elections Commission and Returning Officers in the various electoral districts ought not allow themselves to be bullied ‘by the PPP’s tactics”.

AFC Georgetown Chairman, Michael Leonard, explained that the AFC has four hundred candidates vying for positions across the country in the NDCs and municipalities. He said the AFC has always made it known that as it heads into its first Local Government Elections on its own, it would have been working along with independent bodies and persons.

He said many of the persons who are on the AFC’s lists as candidates are independent individuals and not AFC members and many of those persons would have done their own ground work to pick up nominators and supporters of their candidacy.

The PPP has been accusing the AFC of “duping” some persons into offering themselves up as nominators for the AFC candidates.
