AG finds parking meter contract “heavily in favour” of concessionnaire

The Attorney General and the Finance Minister have both completed their review of the Georgetown City Council’s Parking Meter contract.

They have found that while the contract is not illegal, it is heavily in favour of the company that was granted the concession to begin installing and managing the parking meters in Georgetown.

State Minister Joe Harmon on Thursday told the media that the Attorney General has recommended that the Council employs the services of an accountant to further review the contract because of it being heavily in favour of the concessionnaire.

He said the Minister of Communities will express the  Attorney General and Finance Minister’s position on the contract.  Harmon said the government remains committed to respecting the independence of the Georgetown City Council and so it will allow the council to take the recommendations on board and act on them by itself.

City Hall came under widespread public criticism for its contract with the Smart City Solutions Inc. company for the installation and management of the parking meters.

While the City Council would be making no direct investments in the project, under the current contract it is expected to receive 20% of the gross earnings.  News Source understands that government officials believe that figure is too small, taking into account the length of the contract.

In an effort to get the public on its side, the company that got the contract is expected to begin public consultations on the initiative to introduce parking meters in Georgetown.
