Passengers of an East Bank Demerara mini bus dashed for cover on Wednesday evening as a lone gunman shot and killed a 32-year-old man who was sitting in the mini bus.

According to police investigators, the incident occurred just after 7pm at Agricola, East Bank Demerara. The dead man has been identified as Gladstone George of Brutus Street, Agricola.

Eyewitnesses said George was sitting at the back of the bus which was stuck in traffic as a result of a fire at Eccles, when the gunman came up to the back of the bus and fired two shots at George and made off on a motorcycle.

Persons who were in the mini-bus ran for help and said it appeared as though George was the clear target since there was no attempt by the gunman to harm anyone else.

The 32-year-old man was rushed to the Georgetown Hospital where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.  An investigation into the incident has been launched.
