All crew members safe from cargo vessel that sank

All of the crew members of a local cargo vessel which sank over the weekend are safe after they were all rescued by other vessels.

The Maritime Administration was concerned that at least one crew member was missing following the sinking of the cargo vessel “Capt. Saif”. However, investigations have revealed that three of the four crew members were rescued by a fishing boat while the other was rescued by another passing boat.

In a statement last evening, the Maritime Administration said the vessel departed Georgetown on Saturday August 1 for Port Kaituma in Region One.

“During the voyage, the vessel developed a list which an attempt was made to rectify with crew, but apparently the vessel was unstable.”

The statement added that “at approximately 11:45 pm, the vessel began listing rapidly to port. The crew then jettisoned some of the cargo from the said port side, but their efforts were futile as the vessel continued listing to port and capsized, then completely over with its bottom in the air.”

Millions of dollars worth of cargo including food items and equipment has been lost. An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
