APNU steps up Local Govt. Elections calls; Blue Caps joins in

The Opposition political coalition, A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) is continuing and stepping up its demand for President Donald Ramotar to name a date for the holding of local government elections in Guyana.

On Monday several protesters headed by the Leader of the Opposition, retired Brigadier David Granger, picketed outside of the Office of the President. The APNU is demanding “that the President desists from pretending to desire elections but in fact preventing the holding of local government election”.

The party wants the President to issue the ‘commencement order’ to operationalize the Local Government Commission and it also wants him to initiate the process by which the Local Government (Amendment) Bill could be returned for his assent.

“APNU calls on the President to tell the people of Guyana the truth about local government elections. APNU will continue its protest action until its demands are met”, the party said in a statement.

And the non-governmental group, Blue Caps headed by its Chairman, Mr. Clinton Urling, joined APNU in its protest action on MOnday and said it supports APNU’s call for the President to name a date for the holding of local government elections.

The Blue Caps group has been making known the need for local government elections in Guyana. The last time Guyana held local government elections was in 1994.

The international community and several groups have been pressing the administration to set a date for the elections.
