There continues to be more calls on President Donald Ramotar to fire his Minister of Health Dr. Bheri Ramsarran following the “slap and strip” threats the Minister made against a female activist.

The Guyana Bar Association, the Association of Women Lawyers and Justice Institute Guyana have joined forces and have issued a call on President Donald Ramotar to send the Health Minister packing.

The three legal bodies are convinced that Ramsarran is now an international embarrassment to Guyana and the country can no longer afford such embarrassment.

In a joint statement, the three organisations said President Ramotar needs to “sack” the Health Minister over his “disgusting” remarks against the women’s rights activist.

According to the groups, Dr. Ramsarran’s behaviour was abusive, insulting, threatening and obscene and it is unacceptable for him to use provocation as an excuse.

The organisations believe that President Ramotar’s failure to sack the Minister sends a clear message to the Guyanese people that the government believes it is above the law.

Several local and international organisations have condemned the Minister over the statements and have called on the government to take action.

The governing party, the People’s Progressive Party on Monday said it has already had a serious talk with the Minister about his behaviour.

Last Monday, the Health Minister went on a verbal rant against the women’s rights activist threatening to slap and strip her, after she repeatedly questioned him about the high number of cases of maternal deaths.

At one stage, he told the activist to “eff off” as he called her an idiot for interrupting his roadside conversation with some Berbice reporters.
