A 34-year old barber from Berbice is in the custody of the Customs Anti Narcotics Unit after he was busted on Friday afternoon at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport with just over 25 pounds of cocaine.

A senior official of CANU confirmed the bust and told News Source that the cocaine was found in the false sides of the man’s suitcase and in powdered milk packages.

The barber, whose name has not been released, was preparing to board a non-stop Dynamic Airways flight to New York’s JFK Airport when the bust was made. He is the holder of a U.S visitors visa.

He was immediately arrested and taken in for questioning by CANU agents.

The Customs Anti Narcotics Unit and the Narcotics Branch of the Guyana Police Force have been stepping up their monitoring of outgoing passengers to the United States.

For this year alone, there have been well over 15 drug busts in Guyana and overseas involving Guyanese nationals and other citizens who attempted to traffic cocaine.

Investigations into the latest bust has been launched.
