The Berbice Bridge Company has finally decided to accept government’s subsidy offer which will allow a reduction in the toll to cross the Berbice Bridge effective from January 1, 2016.

In a statement on Saturday, the Ministry of Public Infrastructure announced that an agreement had been reached.

Government had announced its move to ensure a reduction since September but the reduction was stalled by the privately owned Berbice Bridge company which expressed concern about shareholders needing to be consulted fully.

The government earlier this year announced a move to purchase the 10% of shares that Demerara Distillers Limited had in the Bridge.

As the government continued to press the bridge company to reduce the tolls, it launched a river taxi service which has since become very popular among Berbicians.
