Big Political parties gear up for LGE with strong nomination day showing

It was Nomination Day today for the Local Government Elections and the Candidates and their supporters were out in full numbers as they handed in their lists of candidates to the Guyana Elections Commission.

The inclement weather could not douse the excitement as the main political parties swarmed city streets in celebration of the local elections.

Decked in their party colours, supporters of A Partnership for National Unity and the People’s Progressive Party/Civic were the firsts to hand over their lists.

The People’s National Congress is the largest party in the APNU.  The PNC’s Chairperson, Volda Lawrence, reminded that it was the coalition government that ensured the return of local government elections two years ago.

She said the APNU has no fears heading into the local polls. The APNU is going into the Local Elections without its national coalition partner, the AFC.  The Alliance For Change is going into the elections on its own.

“Fear?? Look at us! We don’t use that word. We welcome everyone, all the individuals, the groups and the other political parties, that they too have the opportunity through the David Granger’s administration to participate at the local level in insuring that we build our communities; that people become more community oriented and that we take ownership of our communities, not only for us but for the future generation”, Ms. Lawrence said.

The party is also very confident with its selection of “newer and younger” candidates who will contest this year.

The PPP is also very confident with its list of candidates.

In full competition mode, PPP Member  Bishram Kuppen spoke on behalf of the party, noting that the party is ready to overhaul City Hall.

“We have just submitted our list of 15 names of candidates who we have selected through intense house to house consultations in the communities, so it is a true representation of the people within. They are all knowledgeable and experienced, and they are ready, willing and able to go into City Hall and to overhaul city hall, because we believe that city hall needs to be overhauled.”

The parties, all left the Nomination Day activity with much enthusiasm as they get ready for major campaigning.
