Brazilian miner chopped to death in Puruni during excavator row

Police investigators have traveled to the Puruni area in Guyana’s gold mining district, to probe the murder of a Brazilian miner.

47-year-old Brazilian national, Helio Batista Xavier Neves, was chopped to death on Friday night by another miner as the two had a heated argument over missing parts for an excavator machine.  The suspect is still on the run.

Investigators were told that the two men got into a confrontation over parts for an excavator machine that could not be located. During the argument, the suspect grabbed a cutlass and viciously chopped Neves to his body multiple times.

The Brazilian national was rushed to the Bartica Hospital but was already dead by the time he arrived.

Guyana has recorded a number of murders in the gold mining areas in Region 7. Increased patrol by police is taking place but appears to be doing very little to stem criminal activity in that area.
