Budget Debates 2016 set to begin on Monday

Impassioned expressions of support and criticism of the 2016 National Budget will commence in the National Assembly from Monday between government and opposition Members of Parliament (MP).

Ahead of those heated debates, which will roll on for the entire week, Finance Minister Winston Jordan is appealing for MPs to keep the interest of citizens at heart at all times during deliberations.

He said he is personally looking forward to the spirited support of his colleague Ministers and MPs on the government side. However his optimism for the same level of support from the opposition MPs was reserved.

Mr. Jordan said he did expect the support from some members of the opposition but anticipates general rejection for the government’s policies, programs and measures.

The Minister said he is beginning to feel that nothing coming from the government side of the House would be good enough for some opposition members. J

ordan said he will be going to all lengths to defend his $230 billion fiscal plan. He hopes MPs will confirm to their time limits and so as to allow for a swift completion of budget debates and passage of budget so that all capital and current projects for 2016 can get underway.

Meanwhile, Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo said himself and fellow opposition MPs will offer their criticisms during the debate.

The opposition has already objected to several of the budget measures.
