Capitol News Anchor Neil Marks is new GPA President

Anchor and News Editor attached to the nightly WRHM Capitol News, Neil Marks was on Sunday elected unopposed as President of the Guyana Press Association.

The Association held its General Meeting and Elections at the Theatre Guild.

Marks will be supported by a new executive team that was also voted in and which includes Stabroek News’ Samantha Alleyne Williams as the Vice President, Capitol News reporter Iva Wharton as Secretary, Stabroek News reporter Gaulbert Sutherland as Treasurer, I-News Editor Fareeza Haniff as Assistant Secretary/Treasurer  and executive committee members Enrico Woolford of Capitol News, Denis Chabrol of Demerara Waves, Guyana Chronicle Sports Editor Leon Horatio and Insight Magazine’s Nazima Ragubir.  News Source’s Publisher Gordon Moseley is expected to serve as the Immediate Past President.

In brief remarks, the new GPA President called for the support of the entire media landscape in Guyana and said he intends to roll out a number of new initiatives and programmes that he hopes will be fully supported by the larger membership.

Former President Gordon Moseley in his outgoing remarks thanked the executive and membership for the support he enjoyed over his two terms in office as he called for a more united media. Moseley said the executive could only be as strong as the membership and so there is a need for a more supportive GPA membership.

He said that as Guyana heads into national elections, journalists and media workers must ensure they do  not become part of the story. Moseley said media workers must ensure they report in a fair and responsible manner. He called on politicians to be respectful of journalists and the work that they do.

The new GPA executive will serve a two year term.
