Caribbean Airlines announces US$5 increase in cost for 2nd checked bag

The Trinidad and Tobago based Caribbean Airlines has announced that that from May 01, 2016 there will be a new rate of US$30.00 for passengers’ second checked bag.

In a release, the airline said all passengers’ first checked piece of luggage will continue to fly free with the maximum weight allowed for each bag remaining 50 pounds.

The airline also announced that the old baggage rate of USD 25.00 will be honoured on all tickets that were purchased up to March 31st, 2016.  All other baggage allowances and related fees remain the same.

Business Class passengers will remain exempted from the baggage fees. They are allowed three complimentary checked bags at 50 lbs each. Customers enrolled in Caribbean Miles & 7th Heaven Rewards Loyalty programmes who have earned silver, gold or executive gold status and passengers purchasing flexible economy fares have also been exempted from the new fees.

“Customers who travel with carry-on baggage, are still entitled to one (1) free carry-on piece not exceeding 22lbs and one (1) personal item which could be in the form of a laptop, briefcase, purse or small bag”, the release said.

It added that customers may pay for any extra bags ahead of their travel date using Caribbean Airlines Ticket Offices and Reservations Call Centres, or at their departure Airport.

The US$5 increase in the cost for the second checked bag comes in the same month that hundreds of Guyanese nationals are expected to travel home for the 50th Independence celebrations.

Although the airline has plastered the Guyana Golden Jubilee logo on two of its jets, it is still to offer special fares for the month of the celebrations.
