Charlestown taxi driver sentenced to 4 years in jail for causing death by dangerous driving

A Charlestown taxi driver will spend the next four years in jail after he pleaded guilty today to causing death by dangerous driving.

Fifty-three year old, Fizal Mohammed appeared in Court today before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan and was slapped with the causing death by dangerous driving charge.

He had been in custody since last Friday when the incident occurred in Kingston.

According to the Prosecutor, Fizal Mohammed, of Charlestown, Georgetown, was under the influence of alcohol when he jumped into his motor car, bearing license plate number HC-358, and instead of driving off, reversed the car in full speed, slamming into Gregory Nedd, who was sitting on a chair to the side of the roadway.

The man was rushed to the Georgetown Hospital, where he succumbed from serious spinal injuries.

Mohammed was initially arrested for dangerous driving and driving under the influence of alcohol, but the charge was upped to causing death by dangerous driving, after the investigators were informed of the death of the accident victim.

After learning of the death of the man today, the defendant offered a guilty plea and was promptly sentenced to four years in jail by the Chief Magistrate.
