China to finance bridge between Guyana and Suriname

The People’s Republic of China which already has several large-scale investments in Guyana has agreed to finance the bridging of the Corentyne River between Guyana and Suriname.

The decision was announced on Monday by Guyana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett. Ever since renewed talks of bridging the Corentyne river began during the Jagdeo Presidency, there was a search for a major investor. China later agreed to finance the multi billion dollar agreement but needed the support of both Guyana and Suriname.

The Governments of the two neighbouring states have both indicated that they accept the offer by the Chinese government.

A complete feasibility study on the construction of the bridge is expected to get underway now that both sides have agreed to the Chinese investment. Once that study is complete, financing will be made available through China’s concessionary loan facility.

Presently persons wishing to travel between the two countries are able to do so via a ferry service which is managed jointly by Guyana and Suriname.
