Agents of the Customs Anti Narcotics Unit, have taken a number of persons into custody after a large quantity of cocaine was on Friday afternoon discovered in several pieces of lumber in the village of Zeelugt on the East Bank of Essequibo.

Up to late Friday night, agents were searching additional pieces of lumber that were being prepared for export. The weighing of the cocaine was continuing into late into the night.

News Source understands that CANU launched a major operation on Friday afternoon that sent its agents to the village of Zeelugt and a lumber yard in the community.

As the agents searched the lumber being prepared for export, they found a number of packets of the cocaine fastened in some pieces of lumber.

As agents went through more of the lumber, more of the illegal substance was discovered in packets.

Several arrests were immediately made at the scene and agents are expected to question a number of other persons who may be linked to the bust.

Among those suspected of having links to the shipment, are persons believed to be involved in local motor racing activities.

The investigation is continuing.
