Common Entrance overall passes in Math jumps from 13% to 45%

The 2017 results of the National Grade Six Assessment examinations will be released on Friday. Already, Education officials are said to be pleased with the improved performance in mathematics.

More than 13,000 children wrote the examinations at both the public and private level.

While officials have been tightlipped about the results,  One senior Education official has told News Source that based on initial checks, there has been a significant increase in the pass rate for Mathematics and an increase in the pass rate for English also.

The mathematics pass rate has jumped from 13% in 2016 to 45% in 2017.

“That is significant, very significant”, the official said.

The  overall pass rate in English has crossed the 50% mark and the overall pass rate in Science has also increased. Social Studies is the only subject area that has remained the same with an overall pass rate in the mid 40’s.

The official said the increases in the three subject areas, especially in Mathematics, would support the ongoing efforts by the Education Ministry to focus more on the two subject areas.

Last year, an emergency plan was unveiled to tackle the mathematics subject area after it was revealed that most of the children writing the common entrance exams had been performing badly in the subject.

Under the programme, specialized teaching methods were adopted and teachers received additional training and support.
