Director of Child Care Protection Agency sent on Administrative leave

The Director of the Child Care and Protection Agency, Ann Greene has been sent on administrative leave following a verbal outburst during a meeting with the Minister of Social Protection Volda Lawrence and the Minister within the Ministry of Social Protection, Simona Broomes.

News Source understands that the two Ministers as part of their familiarization tour of the government agencies under their Ministry visited the Child Care and Protection Agency earlier this week.

Lawrence who is the senior Minister led the delegation from her Ministry which also included the Permanent Secretary. The team was reportedly shocked at some of the working conditions of staffers at the Agency and raised concerns.

And as Greene took the team around to meet staffers, she reportedly only introduced Lawrence as “the Minister” and repeatedly ignored the presence of Broomes.

During a meeting with senior staff members and the two ministers, Greene said she needed to clear her mind of something and reportedly turned to Broomes and said she was unprepared to work with her because of statements Broomes had made on the campaign trail.

A source close to the agency said Greene was to the top of her voice, as she demanded that the new Minister apologise for statements made on the campaign trail about the work of the agency.

“She pushed back her chair and turned to Minister Broomes and said you madam, me and my staff are not prepared to work with you because you had a lot to say on the campaign trail”.

Broomes also raised her voice in response to Greene.

Minister Lawrence reprimanded Greene over her behavior and tone and was about to leave the meeting when Greene said she was sorry but needed to get the issue off of her chest.

The meeting eventually ended with both Ministers expressing their shock over the attack from the Director of the Child Care and Protection Agency.

The two were also shocked as they visited care centres for children that are under the control of the Child Care Agency and came face to face with the living conditions of the children and staffers.

A decision was reportedly made to send Greene on leave as moves begin to restructure the entire department.

Broomes who is a child rights and women’s rights activist has never hid her concerns about the Child Care and Protection Agency over the years.

As head of one of the leading organisations that took on the fight against human trafficking, Broomes complained several times about the conditions victims would be forced to live under once they were handed over to Child Care Services.

There was even an occasion when one of the victims became pregnant while in the care of a foster home by the son of the foster parent. Broomes argued then that the agency was not doing a good enough job at taking care of victims and children who were abused.

Now that she is the Minister overlooking the agency, she has indicated that she intends to work towards fixing many of those problems.
