With chart-topping hits and comparisons to Bob Marley, Jamaican reggae star, Chronixx, is on a mission to revitalize the love for reggae music. Many music insiders believe he has already done that.
Chronixx is currently in Guyana for the GTT Smile Guyana show, as part of his Caribbean tour. On Friday he spent a few hours at the University of Guyana, sharing his views on life and music before a packed student and staff audience in the George Walcott Lecture Theatre of the Turkeyen Campus.
Chronixx is considered one of the most conscious reggae singers of this generation and recent ones and he appears to humbly understand that responsibility.
He told the scores of students gathered that he was born into a musical family that he didn’t choose and was taught music by people he didn’t choose, but he is grateful for the journey.
The 25-year-old spoke of growing up in a large family, where sharing was a part of life. Today it is his music that he shares with the world and he is happy with the response.
According to Chronixx, the young people of today must focus more on building and developing their minds and never allowing the opinion of others to decide their destiny. He said they should never allow themselves to become enslaved by the opinion of others.
“You have people who dress a certain way, because it is somebody’s opinion that they dress that way. And they take it as if its their own, but its not their own. It is somebody else’s opinion”, he said.
He added that “we the youths of the Caribbean, the youths of Africa and the youths of the earth, the natural human beings, we have to find a way to rise above the opinion of other people, especially if these opinions are by-products of that core opinion”.
The young reggae star said the Caribbean region needs thinkers and therefore the region must invest more in education and not just education buildings.
He told the University students that their time at the University should be about them discovering themselves and holding true to themselves.
Chronixx said he understands the impact music could have and that is the reason his songs are uplifting and are lessons of life, making it clear that he does it for the love and not the likes.
The Smile Guyana Show takes place at the Guyana National Stadium on Saturday night. It is being promoted and sponsored by GTT and organised by Hits and Jams Entertainment.
