Dominica’s Parliamentary Opposition Leader, Lennox Linton is currently in Guyana calling for the resignation of that island’s Prime Minister, Roosevelt Skerrit.

Linton’s trip coincides with the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) 28th Inter-sessional meeting which is currently being held in Guyana.

Speaking at a news conference at Herdmanston Lodge on Thursday afternoon, the Opposition Leader said that he came to Georgetown to talk about the state of affairs in Dominica.

He is accompanied by Senator Dr. Thompson Fontaine and Parliamentary Representative for the Capital City of Roseau, Joseph Isaac.

He said that as a result of the style of governance pursued by the Skerrit administration in recent years, concerns have been mounting with regards to the direction that the country is heading.

“Recent events in Dominica has lead to the demand for Skerrit to resign from his office as Prime Minister and allow the Constitutional rule of law to take effect” he said, adding that this would mean appointment of another PM by the President of Dominica.

Issuing a call for Skerrit’s resignation, Linton added that the demand is “gaining traction” in Dominica. He said that this demand is being made because the “conduct” of the Prime Minister has been “quite disgraceful”.

The Opposition Leader went on to list several events which he believes have caused the office of the Prime Minister to be a “disgraceful one”.

“…these involve the corrupt granting of economic citizenship, risky economic citizenship revenues and very critically, the sale of diplomatic passports; the creation of counterfeit diplomats supposedly serving as envoys for Dominica but really involved in criminal activities around the world” Linton stated.

And having planned his trip to coincide with CARICOM’s meeting in Georgetown, the Opposition Leader said that he believes it is time for the Heads of Government of CARICOM to intervene and to do what is right for the citizens of CARICOM.

“We want the Heads of Government to act urgently, on what we consider to be very disturbing developments in Dominica” he added.

Two weeks ago protestors stormed and looted buildings in Dominica in protest of the Skerrit administration. The PM subsequently announced that these events were part of a bigger plan which involved a planned coup by Linton and other elements in the opposition. These claims were subsequently denied by Linton who distanced himself from the actions of the protestors.

CARICOM also issued a statement condemning the violence while reminding Dominicans of their right to engage in peaceful protests which is their democratic right.
