DPP instructs murder charges re-instituted against cricketer

The Director of Public Prosecutions has instructed that the murder case against cricketer Carlyle Barton be reopened and that the preliminary inquiry continue.

Barton was set free by a City Magistrate on the murder charge back in November. The murder charge was connected to the caught on tape shooting death of Shawn Nelson at Orange Walk, Georgetown.

A number of police and other witnesses were a no show in court and that reportedly forced the magistrate to set Barton free at the time.

Although the murder was caught on camera, no police witness attended court to enter the video recording into evidence although there were several adjournments.

The DPP’s instructions now mean Barton will have to be rearrested and the murder charge against him continue. It is unclear whether the young cricketer is still in Guyana.

The family of Shawn Nelson had cried out for justice and had raised questions about the way the case was handled by the prosecution and the court.

The video recording of the incident showed Barton whipping out a gun from his waist and firing a shot at Nelson who fell to the ground and die one day later from his gunshot wound to the head. The video recording also showed the young cricketer driving away from the scene after the shooting incident.
