Dr. Ramaya to serve as Region Six Regional Executive Officer

Weeks after resigning from the Alliance for Change (AFC), which makes up the six party coalition government in Guyana, Dr Veerasammy Ramayya has been appointed the Regional Executive Officer (REO) of Region Six and is now back in the bosom of the party he complained about just a few weeks ago.

Dr. Ramayya, early in August had announced his intentions to resign from the AFC and complained that the coalition is not allowing him to serve the Region from which he hailed.

But he confirmed the appointment as REO today when contacted by News Source. He also explained that he has since withdrawn his resignation and remains a member of the AFC.

The AFC member had campaigned for the party in Region Six and the coalition’s 2015 rally at Whim was held in front of his home.

He seemed disappointed when he was not offered a position after the May elections which saw the coalition securing victory.

He told News Source that his appointed as REO was as a direct result of his recent protest. According to Dr. Ramayya, his appointment takes effect from next Tuesday and he made it clear that he was not appointed by the AFC but rather by the government.

“Yes I was serious about leaving the party because I wasn’t quite satisfied with the position… I wanted to serve and have my input in the region,” he said.

Ramayya said during the People’s Progressive Party’s 23 years in office, Berbicians were never satisfied with what the party had done for the region and its youths and he was disappointment when he was not given the opportunity to make things better.

“The playgrounds, library and even the infrastructure in terms of streets and roads nothing good was done and I feel I can make a good contribution in the next 3 to five years and ensure that the tax payers money is properly utilized,” he added.

The Minister of Communities, who has responsibility for local government, Ronald Bulkan could not be reached for a comment. In the past, the APNU and AFC had complained about political personalities being appointed to the position of Regional Executive Officers.

Ramayya served as a candidate for the coalition at the last elections.
