Minister of Education, Dr. Rupert Roopnarine is to be transferred from that position to the Ministry of the Presidency, where he will take up a new ministerial position under that Ministry.

Multiple government sources have told News Source that senior Government officials have been looking at the issue and the change is expected to take effect in a few days.

The 74-year-old, Dr. Rupert Roopnarine, who is the Working People’s Alliance senior official in the coalition government, has not been in the best of health for the past several months and that situation may have triggered the decision to free up his workload and move him to a less demanding position.

Minister within the Ministry of Education, Nicolette Henry, is expected to act in the position of Minister of Education until a decision is made on whether she will take on the role fully.

Ms. Henry has already been spearheading several education initiatives over the past year and has been overlooking a number of Education departments, while holding on to the portfolio for Culture, Youth and Sport, which also falls under the Education Ministry.

A senior government source explained to News Source that the situation had to be addressed, since because of the health issues, Dr. Roopnarine has been forced to scale back on his presence at his office, and that has put a strain on the day to day running of the Ministry.

Roopnarine is one of the founding partners of A Partnership for National Unity, which eventually joined forces with the Alliance For Change, and won the 2015 elections.  He served as the Prime Ministerial Candidate for the APNU when it contested the 2011 elections.
