East Coast man chops son to death after youth defends mother

An Annandale, East Coast Demerara family has been plunged into mourning following the brutal early morning murder of a 24-year-old man by his own father.

The dead young man has been identified as Mohesh Chand who worked as truck operator.  He was brutally stabbed and chopped to death early on Thursday morning by his father, Amernauth Chand.

According to reports, the father, who has a drug abuse problem, was assaulting the young man’s mother because she did not want to give him money to purchase marijuana.

The younger Chand was sleeping when he was awakened by a commotion in the house. When he left his room to investigate the noise, he reportedly saw his father abusing the mother and threatening her after she refused to give him $200 to buy marijuana.

The young man pulled his father away from his mother and scolded him for hitting the woman. He then reached into his own pocket and gave his father the money that he wanted.

Family members said the man became incensed by his son’s intervention and rushed into the kitchen and grabbed a cutlass.  By this time, the young man had already retired back to his room.  The older Chand charged into the son’s bedroom and an argument began between the two men.

The grief sticken mother said it was during the argument that the father first stabbed the son to the chest with the cutlass before chopping him about the body.

He only stopped when the young man’s body laid motionless on the bedroom floor. Shocked family members alerted the Police and the father was arrested as he remained covered in blood. He remains in Police custody as the investigation continues and murder charges are being prepared against him.

Family members and neighbours said the man would issue threats often against his wife and son and would warn them repeatedly that he would take their lives.

His threats were usually dismissed.

The investigation into the murder is ongoing.
