Education Ministry puts hold on Brickdam Secondary shut down after emergency repairs

The Ministry of Education and teachers at the Brickdam Secondary School have brokered a new agreement that should see students returning to classes in the structurally defective building as early as tomorrow.

Chief Education Officer Olato Sam said some remedial works were done to the building within the last few days and he is satisfied that safety hazards have been minimized.

He said students will complete this school term in the building while arrangement will be made to have the institution, inclusive of students and teachers, relocated for the new academic year.

The Ministry said it has already begun the process of acquiring land to construct a school to house the Brickdam Secondary School and the Central High School, which is also encountering similar difficulties.

Parents of students attending the Brickdam Secondary School on Wednesday threw their support behind students and teachers as they protested the closure of the Brickdam Secondary School by the Ministry of Education.

Shortly after the protest that lasted several hours, discussions were held between teachers and Ministry Officials where they agreed to remain in the building.

The Ministry solicited the signatures of 29 persons, including the Chairman of the Board and the President of the Parent Teacher Association on the new agreement.

Teachers had been engaged in “sit in” exercises since last week but were also unhappy when the Ministry decided to have them seconded to different schools in Georgetown and Region #4.

Sam insisted that the defects to the building was structural and did not believe that any amount of remedial work could fix the situation totally. He also trashed the Guyana Teachers Union claims that the move shut down the school and have teachers and students transferred was hasty.
