Eight more charged for blocking Ituni/Kwakwani road

Eight more residents of Ituni found themselves before Magistrate Clive Nurse at the Christianburg Magistrates’ Court facing obstruction of a public road charges.

The five drivers and three loggers were charged in connection with last month’s protest in the Ituni and Kwakwani area that saw residents blocking the roadways to protest the condition of the main access road in the community. The protest led to several timber and mining trucks being unable to access interior locations and the town of Linden.

Fourteen persons were charged initially with the blocking of the roadway and the Police had promised that more persons would have been appearing before the court.

When the new group appeared before the Magistrate on Tuesday, their attorney Khemraj Ramjattan asked the court to grant all of the persons self bail. The Prosecutor did not object and they will all have to appear in court again on November 20 along with the other 14 persons who were charged previously.

The Guyana Police Force has indicated that while it recognises the right of citizens to protest, it will not allow the blocking of public roads by protesters.
