Enmore man sentenced to five years in jail and fined $237 Million for cocaine in fish

A 33-year-old, Enmore, East Coast Demerara man, who was arrested last August after he attempted to ship over 200 pounds of cocaine in frozen fish, will be spending the next five years in jail.

The man, Kapil Thakurian, was also fined $237 Million. The sentence was handed down today at the Georgetown’s Magistrates’ Court by Magistrate Leron Daly.

The convict stood quietly with his Attorney at his side as the sentence was handed down. At the beginning of his trial, the man had pleaded his innocence but the Prosecution presented evidence that persuaded the court otherwise.

The cocaine was seized by agents of the Police Narcotics Branch  just as the cocaine laden fish shipment was being processed through a local air cargo service for shipment.

Several long pellet like shaped packets of the cocaine were discovered in a number of the frozen fish.

The packets were tightly wrapped in white tape and plastic and placed just above the backbone of the fish.
