Scores of passengers were left stranded on the MV Sambuca ferry early on Monday morning in the Essequibo river after it ran into some bushes and got stuck.

According to reports reaching News Source, the incident took place just before 4 o’clock and there was a lot of confusion on board. The Captain reportedly lost control.

It is believed that the Captain was navigating a turn in the river when he encountered problems and failed to straighten up the ferry in time. Loud screams could be heard on board as the ferry suddenly moved forward and got stuck on the sandbank.

There are reports that another ferry attempted to offer help by pulling the ferry from its stuck position but the rope that was being used burst apart and that effort was abandoned.

Several speedboats hurried to the area and made attempts to assist the stranded passengers.
