Just days after an American man who travelled from Guyana with cocaine in his suitcase handles was busted at the JFK Airport in New York, a Guyanese father and son have found themselves in the custody of the Guyanese authorities after they were busted at the Cheddi Jagan Airport on Friday with a quantity of cocaine in the handles of their suitcases.
The 19-year-old son is in the custody of the Customs Anti Narcotics Unit while the Guyana Police Force’s Narcotics Branch has taken custody of the 41-year-old father.
The two were outgoing passengers to New York when agents from the two Drug Enforcement Agencies probed their suitcases and discovered the white powdery substance which tested positive for cocaine. Officials have not released the quantity of the cocaine found and are also mum on the names of the two persons in custody. There are reports, however, that both the father and son live on North Road in Georgetown.
The duo was about to board a Caribbean Airlines flight when the bust were made. Investigators are expected to interrogate the two over the weekend about the cocaine and the other persons who may be linked to the failed trafficking effort. Its unclear whether the bags which were busted with the cocaine were tagged to both men or just in the name of one of them. Charges are expected to be filed in the new week once the investigations are completed.
Earlier in the week, an American Citizen was arrested at the JFK Airport in New York after he arrived there on a Caribbean Airlines flight from Guyana with over 4 pounds of cocaine in the handles of one of his suitcases. He is currently facing drug trafficking charges.
