Three firemen attached the Mahaica Fire Station were taken into police custody for questioning early on Tuesday morning just after responding to a fire along the East Coast of Demerara.

Fire Chief Marlon Gentle confirmed that the three men were being questioned by police after a phone was reported missing from the home where they had responded to reports of a fire.

“They were not arrested, they were being questioned. They were in the house where the phone disappeared and they had to be questioned,” he said.

The men were in fact responding to a fire at the home of Traffic Chief Dion Moore. After the small blaze was brought under control, Moore reportedly discovered that the cellular phone was missing and suspected that the firemen might have removed it.

The Traffic Chief then called in the police to investigate the matter.

The Fire Chief would not deny any wrongdoing on the part of his rank and did not object to them being subjected to police questioning.

The phone is the only thing reported missing and is yet to be located. The Traffic Chief could not be reached for a comment.
