Fly Jamaica offers more options and comfort with new 767

In time for the busy Christmas travel season, Fly Jamaica Airways has put into service its newly acquired 767 aircraft. The wide bodied jet made its inaugural flight into Georgetown from New York on Friday evening and the airline is promising better service and comfort.

On Saturday, Fly Jamaica Director, Roxanne Reece, told reporters at the company’s Ogle office that the airline is pleased to be increasing its fleet and step up the quality of service it has been offering.

She said “for the market, this means we have 245 extra seats because the 767 has 245 seats and it is wide bodied aircraft”. According to the Fly Jamaica Director, the 767 will be working along with the 757 on the Guyana route.

Ms. Reece explained also that the airline will be able to carry more baggage with the new aircraft which has a much larger cargo hold. It was explained that passengers are already allowed two check-in pieces and with the new aircraft they could be allowed to check in a third piece for a cost.

And the airline’s Director also announced that the company is entering the cargo market and will launch a cargo service soon. Amerijet in Guyana will be handling all of the airline’s cargo for that service. Additionally the carrier is also eyeing the Bridgetown, Barbados and Montego Bay, Jamaica markets for the new year.

Fly Jamaica is also getting ready to begin more marketing to target Guyanese who live in Canada. The airline currently offers twice weekly non stop flights between Georgetown and Toronto. The Fly Jamaica Director said while that market has not “been performing as it should”, the company will remain there.

Ms. Reece also reinforced an earlier call she made for Caribbean nationals to support airlines of the Caribbean more. She said Fly Jamaica has permanent staff members in both Guyana and Jamaica and therefore persons should support the airline because it is creating jobs and is having a direct impact on the economies in the Caribbean.

“If you fly with American Airlines or any other airline that is not local, they are not creating the jobs”, she said.

Ms. Reece noted that the airline is not subsidised by any government or country and has not been receiving any subsidies like some other airlines that ply the Caribbean route.

Meanwhile, the company has reached out to a number of Guyanese singers and performers to make them airline ambassadors. It has also been lending support to several local charities.

In February, the airline will celebrate its anniversary and intends to offer special anniversary fares for travelers.
