Four years in jail for career drug trafficker

A South Ruimveldt resident will be spending the next four years of his life behind bars after being found guilty of cocaine trafficking.

Sixty-three year old, Dennis Jones appeared in Court today and was found guilty of trafficking over 22 pounds of cocaine.

The man bowed his head and stood calmly next to his Attorney, Eusi Anderson, as the verdict was handed down.

In pleading for mercy for the elderly man, the Attorney told the Court that his client acknowledges his wrongdoings and since being charged, he has turned to the Lord and is now a christian.

The Court was also told that the man has even embarked on setting up a green initiative business in keeping with the Government’s encouragement to the business community.

All of that pleading could not deter the Magistrate from handing down the four year sentence.

It was back in January, that the man was held after he attempted to post a large parcel with baking powder and cocaine through the Post Office.

The illegal substance was picked up at the Cheddi Jagan Airport while passing through the scanners.

In addition to the prison sentence, Jones has been ordered to pay a $28 million fine.

This will be the man’s second trip to the prison for drug trafficking. He was convicted in another drug trafficking case back in 2012 and sentenced to four years in jail.
