Fuel Tanker explodes at Port Kaituma; Houses and boats gutted

A fuel tanker belonging to a private company burst into flames and exploded on Friday morning at the water front in Port Kaituma, Region One. The boat eventually sank as the fire hopscotched its way to other boats and quickly caught on to two nearby buildings.

The fire started just after 9 o’ clock on Friday morning as the boat was transferring fuel to a nearby bond. One eyewitness told News Source that “everything just burst into flames and there was thick black smoke and a huge fire all over”.

Owners of nearby boats and the captains of the ferry that were all in the area were forced to move out as the fire quickly maneuvered its way across the water on the spilled fuel and caught on to other boats.

Persons who own shops in the area were seen moving out their goods as the fire caught on to two buildings. Residents were forced to use a bucket brigade in an effort to contain the blaze as the fire service contained the blaze.

Hundreds of millions of dollars have been recorded in losses and damages. An investigation is underway.
