Minister of Business, Dominic Gaskin, will be adding the Tourism portfolio to his list from July 1, 2016.
The move comes as the Government is trying to focus more on Public Telecommunications and needs the Minister responsible for that, Cathy Hughes, to focus solely on that portfolio. Hughes will continue to serve as the Minister responsible for Tourism until the end of this month.
She was assigned the Public Telecommunications portfolio back in January as the government separated that responsibility from the Ministry of Public Infrastructure.
Although serving as the Minister of Public Telecommunications, she remained heavily focused on the Tourism sector and that portfolio.
The decision to move the Tourism portfolio to another Ministry was recently made by President David Granger. An official announcement is still to be made. However, several sources close to the Ministry of the Presidency have confirmed the changes.
When contacted this afternoon, Minster Cathy Hughes, who is in New York on official duties, explained that she would have to make contact with us later, since she was not in a position at the time to speak on the issue.
News Source also contacted Minister of Business Dominic Gaskin this afternoon and he confirmed that he has been informed of the additional portfolio that he will have to take on from the 1st, July.
He said he is willing and able to take on the challenge.
Both Gaskin and Hughes come from a business background although Hughes is more grounded in the Tourism field where she once served as President of the Tourism and Hospitality Association. However, her training and career background are more closely knitted to the field of broadcasting and public telecommunications.
