GECOM picks Keith Lowenfield as new CEO

The Guyana Elections Commission has chosen its Deputy Chief Elections Officer Keith Lowenfield to take over the position of Chief Elections Officer. GECOM’s decision came on Wednesday afternoon, just one day after the Commission wrapped up interviews with the final four candidates.

The Opposition coalition group A Partnership for National Unity was the first political party to offer congratulations to the new Chief Elections Officer.

In a brief statement on its Facebook page, the APNU said it “is confident that during Mr. Lowenfield’s tenure as Chief Elections Officer there will be non controversial and properly administered elections”.

Lowenfield who is a retired Major of the Guyana Defence Force worked for a number of years at the Elections Commission.

GECOM began its search for a new CEO after it decided not to renew the contract for its former CEO Gocool Boodoo when his contract ended last year. The Opposition parties had raised a number of concerns about Mr. Boodoo’s time as Chief Elections Officer and several problems that popped up during the different elections under his watch.
