Georgetown man charged for cocaine in tonic bottle case

A  34-year old East La Penitence man was on Wednesday denied bail and remanded to prison over the liquid cocaine in tonic bottle case. The man, Deon Layne, pleaded not guilty to the drug trafficking charge when it was read to him.

The prosecution’s case is that it was Layne who dropped off a bottle of a popular multivitamin tonic at the home of a La Penitence family back in May of this year, for a woman who was staying at the home, to take to the United States for a relative of his.

The woman became suspicious and left the bottle of “tonic” behind. Members of the family in the house, not knowing that it was liquid cocaine in the bottle, decided to make use to the “tonic” and drank the mixture. Four of them, including two young children, collapsed and died from the liquid cocaine overdose. Layne was not charged in connection with their deaths.
