Following his arrest in January, Guyanese Jeweler Richard Ramjit was on Tuesday charged for attempting to export Guyanese gold without a license to do so.

He was granted bail in the sum of $100,000 while being slapped with a second charge for falsifying documents.

Ramjit pleaded not guilty when he appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McClennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

According to the facts of the matter, the Businessman attempted to illegally export some 19.1 ounces of gold. He was an outgoing passenger when he was intercepted by SOCU ranks at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport.

During a search, he was found with a gold band and chain which weighed a total of 19.1 ounces. The gold jewellery is estimated to value in excess of $4 million and were reportedly made of pure gold.

Ramjit will rerun to Court on April 20. SOCU had also gone to his home to carry out further searches and to investigate him for money laundering. Those searches did not unearth anything new.

The man had filed a court action against the Customs Anti Narcotics Unit over his seized gold, not realizing that it was SOCU and not CANU that was investigating him.

Reports state that he would make regular visits to the US and was being closely monitored because of the large pieces of gold jewellery that he wore on those trips.
