Following revelations by former murder accused Sean Hinds that he was indeed a member of a death squad under the previous government, the new APNU+AFC Government made it clear today that it will not offer any state protection for the self-confessed death squad member.

Minister of State Joseph Harmon told media operatives that Hinds’ recent revelations were seriously interesting and could cause the government to support an independent investigation into the Guyana Police Force’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

In his revelations Hinds claimed that during the crime spree period of 2002/2003, he received orders and got guns from the CID headquarters.

Harmon is encouraging the former policeman to “come in” and provide more information but insisted that no amnesty will be offered for anyone involved in criminal activities.

“You can’t make an admission to being involved in criminal activity and then expect this lawful government to give lawful cover,” Harmon said.

In an interview with the HGP Nightly News, Sean Hinds distanced himself from the March 2015 murder of political activist Courtney Crum-Ewing. However, he said he believes that two activists of the now opposition People’s Progressive Party ought to be questioned.

He said he has no fear of going to the police but he is tired of taking the blame for murders and other crimes that he claims he has no knowledge of.

When asked about state protection for Hinds as an individual that could help the police crack major cold cases, Harmon said “he [Hinds] can protect himself but he is welcomed to go to the police.” The Minister of State believes that these revelations have implications for the current spike in criminal activities.

“We believe he can provide linkages as to why the current spike in crime is occurring, we intend to ask additional questions and let’s not forget that up to a few weeks ago he was the body-guard for former Town Clerk Sooba and he was also in the security details of a Presidential Candidate for the last elections”

Hinds who never hid his support for the PPP, was spotted at all of the major rallies of the party during the just concluded elections. He claimed in the HGP interview that after he started to hear rumours that he was wanted for Crum-Ewing’s murder, he went to the PPP headquarters for refuge but received little help.

Harmon said the new government is convinced that common criminals were receiving support from “intellectual authors of crime”. He said the state apparatus was interested in tracking down these persons. He explained that current intelligence arrangements that are in place are working independent of the statements made by Hinds. (Kurt Campbell)
