GPL reverses decision to apply six-month average bill reconnection fee

The Guyana Power and Light company has reversed a decision to implement a reconnection fee for errant customers that would have included a six month average bill payment.

The company in recent newspapers advertisements, announced that once customers had their electricity supply disconnected for non-payment of their bill, they would have had to pay off the bill, a reconnection fee and a 6-month average of their monthly charges.

When News Source first reported on the move, there was widespread outcry from customers who questioned the decision since persons finding it difficult to pay one bill on time, clearly could not have been in a position to pay a six month bill at once,

In a statement, GPL explained the Standard Terms and Conditions (STC) for Electric services (The Forth Schedule to GPL’s Licence) provides clear guidance to the agreement for electric services between GPL and is customer(s). The STC was one of the legal instruments that was amended in October 2010.

“Even though the amended STC of October 2010 makes provision for this requirement, our Company wishes to emphatically state that it has never instituted this legal requirement and will not institute such a requirement without adequate notice to customers”, GPL stated.
